Midsummer Printing Studio
17. – 18.6.2022

@SIDEWAYS FESTIVAL

We invited the festival visitors to come and experiment with natural dyes and print a t-shirt for themselves! The prints combined lyrics from the local Sideways artists with visuals of Midsummer oddities, spells and sparkle. The dyes were made from mushrooms, flowers and wine.

“Colours fade gently in use, just like your memories of summer nights”.

Workshops were free of charge for the visitors.

SEE WITH HANDS – TASTE WITH NOSE – EAT WITH EYES II

@VALLILAN HELMI-TALO (Helmi ry)

Let your senses lead you to the magical world of textile making! During this 3-day course, we asked participants to have an open mind and trust their senses to guide the work. What happened when they let the sense of sight, touch and smell take over and lead?

As a working method, participants used frame weaving to form a unique and personal artwork with different sensorial modalities.

This course was organised for Helmi talo's users.

Hosted by Mira Järvinen and Maï Antila

Colour kitchen 14.8.2021

@SOFTISLAB PILOT

In the Colour kitchen familiar food making by-products were trans-formed into delicious colours! The 1-day workshop introduced the basics of natural textile dyeing by using ingredients familiar from the pantry: avocado peels & pits and red & yellow onion peels. Participants learned about Japanese resist dyeing technique shibori and dyed a silk scarf. Participants were introduced to the joyful randomness of the process – both natural dyeing and shibori being technique that might not always give you what you're expecting but definitely something fascinating for a curious mind.

Soft Synesthetic Synthesis
31.7–1.8.2021

@SOFTISLAB PILOT

How are our senses connected to one another? How could we trans-late touch into sound? The aim of this two-day workshop was to explore the sonification of touch by creating haptic textile instruments. Over the weekend, participants learned how to design and construct simple electronic textile circuits using various conductive soft materials and the Arduino programming environment. Applying their individual practices and skills, participants were encouraged to explore the possibilities of e-textiles in an experimental, engaging and collective setting.
